Course directors

Musturay Karçaaltincaba, MD

Musturay Karçaaltincaba, MD, is a professor of radiology at Hacettepe University Hospitals, where he is also the chief of CT and the lead of the liver imaging team. Dr. Karçaaltincaba’s main interests are abdominal imaging with emphasis in liver imaging and cardiovascular imaging. He has published 232 articles on PubMed (downloaded more than 650,000 times) and has given more than 600 lectures in five continents and 52 countries. He is a member of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology executive committee and the LI-RADS International working group.  

Dr. Karçaaltincaba is a previous RSNA International Visiting Professor, member of RSNA’s International Radiology Education Committee and chair of the Introduction to Research for International Young Academics subcommittee. He loves teaching and sharing his knowledge, particularly on abdominal CT, abdominal MRI, liver imaging and coronary CT.

Christina LeBedis, MD, MS

Christina A. LeBedis, MD, MS, is a board-certified radiologist at Boston Medical Center (BMC), vice chair of research in the Department of Radiology and an associate professor of radiology at Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. Dr. LeBedis has specific interests in emergency radiology, trauma radiology and the barriers that social determinants of health pose for patient utilization of imaging screening for cancer. Dr. LeBedis performs research and speaks on these topics at several societies including RSNA, the American Roentgen Ray Society and the American Society of Radiology (ASER). Dr. LeBedis is a two-time recipient of the ASER research grant for her multicenter trials on blunt splenic trauma and hepatobiliary trauma, respectively.

Deniz Akata, MD

Deniz Akata, MD, is a professor of radiology and chief of the abdominal imaging section at the Hacettepe University Hospitals in Ankara, Türkiye. Dr. Akata has served in many distinguished roles during her career, nationally and internationally. Currently, she serves as the president of the Turkish Society of Radiology and is co-leading the Education Activities Working Group of the European Society of Radiology’s EuroSafe Imaging initiative.

Dr. Akata’s areas of expertise include multimodality imaging of the abdomen and gynecologic and urogenital oncology; she is involved in several multi-institutional EU-funded research projects related to these areas. Dr. Akata is the author or co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and editor and co-editor of two books. She has given more than 70 invited lectures for international organizations and more than 150 invited lectures for national meetings. Dr. Akata contributes widely to undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist radiology education.

Vincent Mellnick, MD

Vincent M. Mellnick, MD, is a professor of radiology, serving as the abdominal imaging section chief as well as the co-director of emergency radiology service at Washington University’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis. He received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, respectively. After completing both radiology residency and abdominal imaging fellowship at Mallinckrodt, he remained on staff there. He has been named an RSNA Lifetime Honored Educator and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and invited publications.

Anwar Padhani, MBBS

Anwar Padhani, MBBS, is an internationally recognized oncological radiologist at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in London. He serves as professor of cancer imaging at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, and is a trustee of the International Cancer Imaging Society. He previously chaired the International Prostate PI-RADS committee. Professor Padhani is deeply committed to education, having delivered over 450 lectures at scientific and educational meetings, including several plenary talks. His contributions have earned him numerous awards, including the Outstanding Teacher Award from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and multiple RSNA Honored Educator Awards.

With an h-index of 93, Professor Padhani has authored over 500 citable works.

Jorge Soto, MD

Jorge A. Soto, MD, is professor of radiology at Boston University School of Medicine and chair of the Department of Radiology at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Soto is a member of the RSNA Board of Directors. His primary interests are imaging of traumatic and non-traumatic abdominal emergencies and pancreatic-biliary imaging. Dr. Soto has more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, 65 review articles or book chapters, and is the editor of five books. Dr. Soto serves, or has served, on editorial boards of multiple journals, including Radiology. He was named Lifetime Honored Educator by RSNA and has received numerous additional awards and recognitions. He is a fellow of the Society of Abdominal Radiology and the American Society of Emergency Radiology and has been a visiting professor and invited speaker at numerous institutions and countries throughout the world. 

Harriet Thoeny, MD

Harriet Thoeny, MD, is professor and chair of radiology at the University and Hospital of Fribourg/Switzerland and the current chair of RSNA’s International Advisory Committee. Dr. Thoeny is an associate editor of Radiology, an honorary member of RSNA, the Spanish Society of Abdominal Radiology and the French Society of Radiology. Her main research interests include functional MRI, with main applications in urogenital and head & neck radiology, as well as cancer imaging and gadolinium-based contrast agents.

Jennifer Uyeda, MD

Jennifer W. Uyeda, MD, is currently an emergency and abdominal radiologist and assistant professor of radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH)/Harvard Medical School where she serves as the associate division chief of emergency radiology. She is currently on the RadioGraphics editorial board, serves as assistant editor of Emergency Radiology and is  a member of RSNA,  the American Society of Emergency Radiology, the Society of Abdominal Radiology and the American Roentgen Ray Society. Her research interests include trauma imaging, acute and emergent conditions in the abdomen and pelvis, and dual energy CT.
