The faculty for the RSNA Global Learning Center (GLC) at Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño de San Borja in Lima, Peru has been selected.

The curriculum for Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño de San Borja will focus on pediatric imaging and pediatric oncology.

“The Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño San Borja is a pediatric hospital in Peru treating children with complex diseases from all over the country,” said Mario Chirinos Gambarini, MD, program director for the GLC. “We provide care in oncology, cardiology, neurology, transplants and pediatric interventional radiology. Being a part of the GLC will help us improve diagnosis for our complex patients.”

RSNA staff and a member of the visiting faculty will visit the site in May.

“The visit in May will be very exciting, as we want to grow and be part of the international community,” Dr. Chirinos Gambarini said. “During the May visit, the faculty members will meet the radiology team at our hospital, see our imaging equipment and technology, and learn more about the common diseases in our region. Participating as a GLC allows our faculty to not only to expand our knowledge but also to promote research and scientific publications in the region that allow us to contribute significantly to the field of radiology.”

Peru-based GLC Will Build Pediatric Imaging Skills

This is the second GLC that is supported by a U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) grant. The grant will support RSNA’s program, “Global Health Initiative: Access to Radiology,” aimed at improving patient care in low- to middle-resourced countries and promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The Lima GLC is part of this initiative.

RSNA GLCs partner with established radiology departments in low- or middle-resource countries and aim to offer ongoing education and support, improve patient care and increase access to technology. The goal is that through these valuable collaborations, RSNA GLCs become regional hubs for excellence in radiology education.

“The partnership between RSNA and the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño San Borja is an exciting opportunity to help expand learning for Peruvian radiologists and residents. We're really looking forward to working together to build their skills and improve their ability to care for children, especially in the area of pediatric oncology,” said Carla Quijano, MD, section head, Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and assistant professor of radiology, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This is a unique chance to make a real difference in the lives of young patients in Peru, and we’re excited about the impact we can have through this collaboration.”

Dr. Quijano will serve as the GLC program director for Healthcare in Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño de San Borja.

“Peru is heavily centralized in Lima, and this is especially true for complex cases such as pediatric oncology patients. Expanding knowledge and care beyond the capital is crucial for improving the treatment and outcomes for these kids,” Dr. Quijano said. “This partnership offers a valuable chance to spread expertise to areas that may not have access to the same resources, helping ensure that more children receive the specialized care they need, no matter where they live.”

Now that the host site has been selected, over a three-year period, a team of RSNA members will work with the GLC to develop a customized educational plan, including a curriculum with hands-on training, didactic lectures, conferences, online courses and other education offerings. Equipment and technical assistance will also be provided based on the needs of the site.

During the onsite meeting, faculty members will learn about the GLC’s educational needs. The visiting faculty, in close consultation with the on-site faculty, will design and present an educational plan tailored to the needs of the GLC using RSNA educational resources. A series of virtual and in-person lectures will be scheduled and hands‐on training and point‐of‐care opportunities will be identified.

The inaugural RSNA GLC launched in early 2020 at Stellenbosch University near Cape Town, South Africa. Since then, GLCs have opened at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Tanzania, Hospital Metropolitano in Quito, Ecuador, Cipto Mangunkusumo National Referral Hospital at the University of Indonesia (FKUI/RSCM) in Jakarta and Shengavit Medical Center in Yerevan, Armenia.
