The Growth of Interventional Radiology Reflected in the RSNA 2019 IR Zone

Recognizing the continued growth of interventional radiology (IR) as a subspecialty, RSNA 2019 is featuring an IR Zone showcasing the latest advancements in image-guided IR.

Now in its second year, the IR Zone is dedicated to companies offering products and equipment unique to the specialty.

In just two years since IR was established as an independent specialty, it continues to soar in popularity for a number of reasons. Factors including new payment models, the transition to value over volume and a greater emphasis on patient-centered care have made IR increasingly attractive. In addition, the techniques are less costly, are minimally invasive, and can be done in an outpatient setting, reducing cost and recovery times. The first interventional radiology/diagnostic radiology certifying exams were issued by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in 2017.

Interventional radiology continues to make gains as a unique specialty with its own distinct residency program. As of April 2019, 84 institutions have received Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation of their integrated IR residency programs.

At RSNA 2019, IR is among the top specialties represented, with more than 1,200 attendees identifying it as their primary specialty.
