On Nov. 8, RSNA joined with more than 140 radiological societies around the world to celebrate the International Day of Radiology (IDoR), recognizing the thousands of lives saved by the many contributions of breast imagers and radiation oncologists.
IDoR — an initiative of RSNA, the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) — is a worldwide day of recognition celebrated each year on Nov. 8, the anniversary of the x-ray.
As part of the IDoR celebration at RSNA headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., staff were invited to contribute to the Research & Education (R&E) Foundation Campaign — Inspire – Innovate – Invest: The Campaign for Funding Radiology’s Future® — in support of radiology research. RSNA staff donated more than $3,000 to R&E Campaign.
Other activities from around the world — many posted on the IDoR Facebook Page — included:
- In Argentina, the Sociedad de Radiología y Diagnóstico por Imágenes de la Provincia de Córdoba (SORDIC) provided mammograms to women without health coverage in 21 health institutions and is holding a series of public lectures to raise awareness.
- In Spain, the Sociedad Española de Graduados en Radiología (SEGRA), together with key groups of radiographers across Spain and the Fundación Reina Sofia, held a special day of lectures on breast imaging for professionals and patients in Madrid.
- The Indian Radiological & Imaging Association invited radiology residents to submit scientific papers on breast imaging. The best were presented at a special IDoR event in New Delhi.
- In Italy, the Società Italiana de Radiologia Medica (SIRM) – Sezione di Senologia organized a meeting in Genova dedicated to breast imaging and radiation therapy.
The radiology community had some fun on their special day, organizing events ranging from cake-baking competitions to fun runs and hikes to support breast screening awareness. The British Institute of Radiology even created a word search and a crossword for IDoR, offering a prize for the first completed crossword.
Along with RSNA, ESR and ACR, IDoR is also supported by the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) and European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI), and the radiation safety campaigns of Image Wisely® and EuroSafe Imaging.
