RSNA Intracranial Hemorrhage Detection Challenge (2019)
Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a serious health problem often requiring rapid and intensive treatment. Identifying any hemorrhage present is a critical step in treating the patient. Radiologists must rapidly review images of the patient’s cranium to look for the presence, location and type of hemorrhage.
Could artificial intelligence be a tool for radiologists in the critical work of ICH detection?
To explore this question, RSNA worked with a consortium of research institutions, the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), image annotation company MD.ai and competition platform provider Kaggle. We assembled a dataset of more than 25,000 annotated cranial CT exams and shared them with AI researchers in a competition to build the most effective algorithm to detect acute ICH and its subtypes.
Of the 1,345 teams from around the world who took part in the challenge, 10 winning teams were recognized in a presentation at the 2019 RSNA Annual Meeting and shared in prize money, generously provided by Kaggle, in recognition of the public value of the competition. In order to be eligible to receive awards, teams were required to publicly release their code, as well as presentations describing their solutions. These materials are linked below.
