Research grants are specific to the applicants’ level of training. Generally, the name of the grant equates to who is eligible (Research Medical Student/Resident/Fellow), while Research Seed and Research Scholar grants are for full-time faculty. Before applying for a grant, confirm that you meet all the eligibility criteria stated in the policies and procedures—if you are unsure, contact R&E staff before applying.
It depends on your situation. Consider the amount of protected time you will have available and how many years since your initial faculty appointment. The Scholar Grant requires applicants to hold a full-time faculty position at the time of application, be within five years of initial appointment and be able to devote 40% effort to the project. Seed Grant applicants do not need to hold a full-time faculty position at the time of application if they will hold such a position at the time of grant commencement. Also, the Seed Grant does not have a minimum percent effort requirement.
Yes. Applicants must be a member of RSNA at the time of application. If you are not a member or your membership has lapsed, contact the membership department, firstname.lastname@example.org, to request expedited membership processing. If your membership category is medical student or member-in-training, the scientific advisor or one of the other investigators listed in your application must be a dues-paying member (indicate their RSNA membership number next to their name in the application).
No. Applicants may submit only one research or education grant application annually.
No. Applicants may reapply for a non-funded project as many times as they wish, as long as they remain eligible for the particular grant program they are applying.
Only for the Research Scholar Grant—applications are accepted from departments that currently host Scholar Grant recipients; however, only one new nomination may be submitted per department per year. There are no such restrictions on the other research and education grant programs.
Yes and No. The Research Scholar Grant requires a minimum of 40% effort over two years; the Research Fellow Grant requires 50% effort over one year; The Research Resident Grant requires 50% effort over one year or 100% effort over six months; and the Research Medical Student Grant requires 100% effort for ten weeks (or equivalent). There is no minimum effort requirement for the Research Seed grant or the education grants.
Yes. RSNA provides $3,000 to be matched by the institution where the research will be conducted; matching funds helps ensure the institution’s commitment to the project and will provide everything necessary to make it a success.
Grant applications are completed online. Use your RSNA username and password to log in. Applications are completed using a series of text boxes, drop-down lists and user uploads. The various sections on the table of contents will change from “incomplete” to “complete” as each section is completed. Click the “Preview Application PDF” at the top of the Table of Contents page at any time to make sure each section is compiled and formatted correctly. Retain a copy of the final version for your records. When the entire application is completed, the “Submit Completed Application to RSNA” button at the bottom of the table of contents page will become active—click it to submit your application.
Yes. It is not uncommon for grant recipients to receive multiple years of funding for the same or different grant programs. One could receive all of the research grants (Medical Student, Resident, Fellow, Seed and Scholar); however, once the Scholar Grant is awarded, the recipient no longer meets the $60,000 prior grant funding eligibility criteria—at that point, it is time to move on to the NIH. There is no limit for education grants.
Yes. Many sections have word/page limits that are stated in the instructions. The detailed research/education plan is limited to two pages for Medical Student Grant applications and five pages for all other grant programs. Page limits include images, tables and other graphics. Additional pages may be used for references. Avoid appendices unless absolutely necessary (more common for education grants than for research grants) and do not use an appendix to extend your detailed plan. Do not exceed the stated limits; study section reviewers may refuse to review applications that do not meet the word/page restrictions.
Yes. Enter the names and contact information for the institution’s grant administrator, department chair and scientific advisor (if applicable), download the signature page, obtain signatures, scan and upload back into the application—the uploaded document will be incorporated into the finished application PDF.
No. All applications are submitted electronically via the grant site.
Letters of support/recommendation are not required or accepted; however, if equipment or supplies for the proposed study will be provided by a source other than the applicant's department (such as a commercial company), include a letter of intent/agreement from that source. Similarly, if the study involves significant collaboration with individuals other than the scientific advisor, include appropriate letters of agreement. For education grant applications, provide a letter from the department chair if the project will involve a significant amount of the applicant's time and/or departmental resources (including other personnel). Restrictions apply—letters that do not conform to the guidelines stated in the application will be removed.
Links to the online grant applications will be deactivated the morning after the deadline date.
Yes. You may make changes until the site is closed. All changes will be saved as long as you click the “Update” button on the sections you edit.
Yes. When you submit an application, you will see an online confirmation to let you know your application has been received. In addition, you will receive an email from RSNA staff after the deadline indicating your application status. Please be patient. This is a busy time of year and it may take one to two weeks to receive the confirmation email. Staff will ask you for clarification if there are any questions regarding eligibility or missing information.
Yes. Both funded and non-funded applicants will receive a copy of the reviewers’ comments. You are encouraged to use these comments as a teaching tool to improve your research/education approach and grant-writing skills.
You will be notified of the outcome of your application by email no later than May 5.
No. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees considers study section scores, amount of available funds and to some degree programmatic balance, when making funding decisions. Grants are funded primarily on quality—there is not a specific number or percentage of applications to be funded within each grant category.
The Foundation’s Board of Trustees strives to maintain a minimum overall funding rate of 25%.
A progress report is required halfway through the project, and a final report after the project is completed. Reporting frequency and due dates vary by grant type. Financial reports are not required.
Simply request a no-cost extension to the terms of the grant. No-cost extensions are not uncommon due to unexpected delays in obtaining IRB or IACUC approval, patient recruitment, etc.
Grants can be transferred from one institution to another or from one investigator to another—transfer requests are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Only Research Scholar Grant recipients are required to attend the RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting during both years of funding. All other grant recipients are encouraged to attend, but not required.
